Organic Feminine Care
Maybe you have made the decision to switch to organic, green and toxic free living. You eat organic. You use all natural cleaning supplies. You've switched out your skincare and makeup. But what about your vagina? Wait, what? That's right lady, your hot pocket! Many of our feminine care products like pads, tampons, and washes have some pretty toxic ingredients in them that we may not even realize.
Why your vagina should go organic too
Think about it, the vagina is technically a mucous membrane and the skin of the vulva is very thin and delicate. It absorbs everything significantly faster and goes straight into the bloodstream.
It's estimated a woman uses between 9,000 - 11,000 pads and/or tampons in her life time. That is a lot of exposure to potentially toxic chemicals in a sensitive and absorbent area of the body.
What's in commercial tampons + pads?
+ Pesticides - We all think of cotton as a natural fiber, but unless organic it's often bio-engineered and sprayed with an abundance of pesticides which are known cancer causing chemicals. It's also been linked to hormonal imbalances and infertility. Did you know that 26% of the world's pesticides are sprayed on cotton? THAT IS A HUGE AMOUNT!
+ Chlorine Bleach - Most pads and tampons are bleached with chlorine to make the fibers white. A by-product of chlorine is highly toxic dioxin which is linked to endometriosis and a known carcinogen.
+ Scented Tampons and Pads - Synthetic fragrance is a hormone disruptor and the perfume in scented tampons and pads can throw off the ph of your vagina resulting in yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis.
What's in commercial feminine washes + wipes?
+ Synthetic Fragrance - Did you know the #1 cause of contact dermatitis is synthetic fragrance? That applies to your vagina and vulva too.
+ Sulfates - A soapy foaming agent that can cause irritation and dermatitis.
+ Ammonium Chloride - Used as a fragrance ingredient and can cause skin irritation.
+ DMDM hydantoin - Formaldehyde release which is a known carcinogen.
+ Parabens and Phenoxyethanol - Preservatives that are known hormone disruptors, carcinogenic and toxic to reproduction.
Safe + Clean Solutions
Nowadays, there are many wonderful organic feminine care options on the market. Here are a few I've tried and really enjoy. If you are looking to make the switch to organic pads or tampons look for organic cotton, chlorine, and fragrance-free. And if you are looking for a natural feminine wash or wipe look for formulas that contain no fragrance, no dyes, no sulfates, no parabens or formaldehyde releasers like DMDM hydantoin. Read your labels!
The Honey Pot Company
The Honey Pot Company is a plant based vegan feminine care line that is made with sustainable materials and fragrance-free formulas. They make some fantastic feminine products ranging from wipes and washes in several formulas that cleanse and balance the vagina. They recently launched panty liners and herbal pads that are pesticide and chlorine free.
The Honey Pot Company even makes a pregnancy specific Mommy-To-Be wash, wipe and a postpartum pad infused with rose, lavender, aloe, and mint. The herbal pad can be sprayed with alcohol-free witch hazel and then frozen to create a soothing pain-relieving ice pack for your lady bits. I now know what my friends are getting as gifts when they have babies!
The products I tried are the sensitive skin wash and wipes. This particular formula contains cucumber, aloe, and coconut.
Cora Organic Tampons
Cora Organic Tampons is not only an effective good quality organic tampon, they have a great cause that I totally support. The tampons are made with 100% organic cotton, contain no fragrance, chlorine bleach, pesticides, insecticides or GMOs.
Did you know that many conventional cotton farms around the world use child labor and they are exposed to high amounts of pesticides? Cora is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). GOTS protects workers’ rights. They ensure that employment is voluntary, working conditions are safe, fair wages are paid, and no child labor is ever used.
We don't think about this too much here in the United States, but there are millions of girls and women around the world that stay home from school and work because they can't afford the basic necessity of menstrual supplies. 300 million girls and women use sand, ashes, rags and plastics to manage their periods. Many drop out of school when she reaches puberty. This makes me want to cry for them. Cora provides girls and women with a months supply of pads for every month supply of tampons we buy. Good job Cora!
Periods suck with great pads and tampons, I can't imagine the struggle these girls and women go through. Not only do I feel good about using safe tampons for my health but the health and well being of other girls and women. Cora is available online, monthly subscription box or at Target.
